Jacob Hansen has served as a teacher and youth mentor in local private and public schools, wilderness programs in Utah’s desert country, and the backcountry of Yellowstone National Park. He has taught courses ranging from modern American literature, cultural geography, world history, and environmental sciences to community gardening and traditional living skills. Jacob has also instructed at Winter Count and Rabbitstick, the largest primitive and traditional living skills gatherings in the West. Beyond the classroom, much of his education comes from his travels throughout Asia, the South Pacific, Central and South America, and locally in the Rocky Mountains. Jacob studied permaculture in Patagonia, Argentina with Darren Doherty, one of the world’s foremost designers in broadscale permaculture design. Recently, Jacob has also worked as a farmer in the Salt Lake Valley offering fresh produce to local restaurants and farmer’s markets. His approach to teaching involves project and land-based learning. He currently serves as the director of Wasatch Woodsgrown.
Britt Retzlaff obtained her permaculture design certification through Ecosa Institute in Prescott, AZ with an emphasis in drylands design and rainwater harvesting. Currently, she works with TreeUtah as the steward and educator for their permaculture demonstration garden, a perennial food forest garden in the Rose Park neighborhood of Salt Lake City. Her contributions to WW are rainwater harvesting workshops within the permaculture courses, web development, as well as menu and food preparation for onsite intensive courses.
